Roadmap for SDG Implementation

Since 2015 Curaçao has expressed its commitment to tackling its development challenges through the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In 2016, the Council of Ministers of Curaçao ratified the National Development Plan (NDP), which focused on five priority areas: (1) education, (2) economy, (3) sustainability, (4) national identity and (5) good governance and leadership. The NDP outlined 4 priority Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), SDG 4: Quality Education; SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy; SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth; and SDG 14: Life Under Water.

Curaçao must commit to achieving sustainable development through actions such as reducing inequality, poverty alleviation, improving education, strengthening national identity and social cohesion, strengthening its diverse economy, focusing on and maintaining environmental sustainability, and good governance.

To take the next step on implementation of the National Development Plan and Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, the Government of Curaçao welcomed a team of United Nations Agencies which carried out a “Mainstreaming Acceleration Policy Support (MAPS) mission to Curaçao in June 2018.

The UN team consisted of representatives from UNDP, ILO, UNICEF, UNFPA, and ECLAC, and during the mission they met with multiple stakeholders from Government, Parliament, national consultative organs, private sector, academia, labor unions, civil society, and youth groups.

The key result of this mission is the Roadmap for SDG implementation in Curaçao, which focuses on key accelerators, prioritizing actions that are in line with national priorities, areas that are lagging behind, as well as actions that can maximize impact across various SDGs.

On Wednesday, December 12, 2018, the Council of Ministers approved the Roadmap for SDG implementation in Curaçao and established the Curaçao 2030 National Commission for the SDGs  for the further implementation of the NDP and the Agenda 2030 (SDGs).

Five key areas have been identified as priority accelerators:

1. Inclusive, Sustainable Economic Growth
2. Environmental Sustainability
3. Improved Education System
4. Poverty Reduction
5. Youth Empowerment
